Category 1 CEU Application Materials

Conference Organizers: Please download and review the CEU Guidelines for information on NSGC's criteria for Category 1 CEU Approval. Please download and complete the Category 1 CEU Application. Additional resources that should be utilized when planning your educational activity and completing your application are listed below:

  • Assessment of Program Content (A checklist of what is counted and what is not counted when calculating contact hours/CEUs)
  • List of Behavioral Verbs (To be utilized when developing learning outcomes/objectives for your program. Please note that "understand" is not considered a behavioral verb.)
  • Educational Activity Overview Form (This form is a sample of how learning outcomes/objectives should map to presentation content. Conference organizers should complete and submit an Educational Activity Overview form for each session taking place within their overall event.)
  • Conflict Of Interest Policy and Agreement (NSGC requires that all conference organizers have their presenters complete a Conflict of Interest Disclosure Form. In the event that a presenter has a conflict of interest, this should be disclosed to the meeting attendees in advance of the presentation, either by listing it in the meeting materials or by listing it on a slide at the beginning of the presentation. This form and policy is included as a sample.)
  • Sample Self Report Form (Please download a sample Self-Report form to be utilized for tracking of CEUs earned during multi-session conferences)
  • Evaluation and Assessment Questions (Please download this form for an example of evaluation questions that are designed to assess participants learning)
  • Computation of CEUs: 1 CEU = 10 hours of learner contact with the content of the learning activity (includes classroom, self-paced instruction, pre/post assignments, and/or homework in support of a learning outcome). The formula for classroom events is computed by summing all of the minutes for all activities in a learning event, subtracting time spent on non-allowable activities, dividing by 60 minutes, and dividing again by 10 hours, with the fraction for the last few minutes rounded off to the nearest tenth. If the resulting computation ends in less than .5, round down to 0. If the resulting computation ends in .5 or higher, round up to the nearest whole number.

For consideration of Continuing Education Units (CEUs) for genetic counselors, please complete the CEU application and submit it with the required supporting material. Applications and supporting material must be received in the NSGC Executive Office no later than 6 weeks in advance of the printing of your general information brochure in order to be considered. Programs using only online announcements may submit the application up to 4 weeks in advance of the online posting of the announcement.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to the turnaround time required for review of applications, NSGC cannot guarantee approval of programs submitted after the deadlines noted above.

Please note that NSGC requires payment of $25.00 per indivudal claiming CEUs. It is recommended that conference organizers allow participants the option to purchase the CEU fee at the time that they register for the activity.

Following the conclusion of your activity, NSGC requires that you submit a spreadsheet containing the following information for each participant: First Name, Middle Name, Last Name, Company, Address Line 1, Address Line 2, City, State, Zip, Email Address, CEUs Earned and Contact Hours Earned. The payment of participants' CEU Fees will also be due at this time. All materials must be received within 60 days following the conclusion of your activity unless stated otherwise.

Once you have filed for CEUs on behalf of your participants, NSGC will issue (via e-mail) an official CEU notice to each participant that details the total number of CEUs and Contact Hours earned for each activity. NSGC will maintain a record of CEUs for all participants for up to five years.
