Journal of Genetic Counseling (JGC) CEU Program

Information For Participants

Learning Objectives for continuing education program

  • To review the theories relating to the practice of genetic counseling.
  • To examine different counseling approaches used in a genetic counseling session.
  • To analyze the effectiveness and impact of genetic counseling.
  • To recognize how genetic counseling skills and theories can impact other health care fields.
  • To identify areas of current research occurring within the field of genetic counseling.

Source and number of articles used in the program

All articles included in this program are taken from the Journal of Genetic Counseling, which is published six times a year. Typically, two articles per issue are selected for a total of 10 articles each year. The last issue of the journal is not included in this program since it is published after the program ends. The titles of the articles chosen for the program will be posted on the NSGC website, on the quia.com website, and will e-mailed to participants.

Availability of CEU program quizzes

  • Both NSGC members and non-members can participate in the program. If you are a NSGC member, please make sure you login to the website to ensure that you receive the member rate when registering.
  • Once you have completed the registration process, information regarding how to access the quizzes will be sent to you the following Monday after registering. If the instructions are not received, please contact Kathleen Tindall at the Executive Office directly at ktindall@nsgc.org
  • Registration for the program must occur prior to November 23rd at 11:59pm CST of the same year as the quizzes.
  • Each quiz will be posted on the website, Quia.com, shortly after the journal issue containing it is published.
  • The NSGC and Quia websites will post the titles of the two articles that have been selected for the CEU program.
  • You may take the quiz at any time during the year from the time it is posted until the program ends on December 7th at 11:59pm CST of the same year. You can wait until the deadline date and take all five quizzes on the same day, although this isn’t advised.
  • Once the program closes on December 7th, you will not be able to take any quiz.

Quiz questions

  • Each quiz will contain 5 questions and be based on one article.
  • Quiz questions will be in a multiple choice format.

Quiz scoring

  • You must receive a score of 80% (4 correct answers out of 5 questions) in order to pass the quiz and have it count towards your accumulated CEU credits.
  • You may take each quiz up to 3 times. If you do not pass on the third attempt, you will not be awarded CEUs for that quiz.
  • If you open a quiz for any reason, even if you do not submit a response, it will count as one attempt at taking the quiz. You cannot start a quiz and return to it at a later time. If you do that, it will count as two attempts.
  • Because you get multiple attempts to pass a quiz, results will not be available until after the program ends. If you are interested in receiving the quiz results, please e-mail the program manager.

Accumulation of CEUs

To find out how many CEUs you have earned in the current year, you can access your quia quiz account (instructions provided when you register) to see how many quizzes you have passed. Add up the number of passed quizzes and multiply by 0.1. The answer is the CEU credit you have accrued at that point in time.

CEU Process

  • One contact hour (0.1 CEUs) will be awarded for each quiz you pass. A maximum of 10 contact hours (1.0 Category 1 CEUs) will be awarded at the end of the calendar year for passing all ten quizzes given (two quizzes per issue of JGC).
  • If you are unable to take or pass all quizzes, you still can receive partial CEU credit for any quizzes passed.
  • Approximately one month after the program ends, you will receive an e-mail containing a link to an on-line survey evaluating the program. Please complete the survey. This is part of the CEU granting process and a way for us to improve the program.
  • After the program has ended, the quiz results are tallied, and surveys are completed, an official e-mail from the NSGC Executive Office containing your CEU certificate will be sent to you. You will not be receiving any CEU Certificates in the mail.
