Professional Status Survey 1999
By Katherine A. Schneider, MPH and Kathy J. Kalkbrenner, BA

One way in which the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) measures our collective achievements is through the Professional Status Survey (PSS). Every two years, the PSS asks questions about demographics, current job situations, and overall satisfaction with the genetic counseling profession. This allows us to obtain important information about our mem-bership, which can then be compared to data collected in previous years.

The PSS benefits both individual genetic counselors and our organization as a whole. Genetic counselors can use the report to help negotiate for increased salaries or other benefits and our Executive Board can utilize the data for strategic planning and to showcase our organization to other medical groups.

NSGC is close to celebrating its 20th year. This makes it a perfect time to reflect on how well we are realizing our vision to be the leading voice, authority and advocate for the genetic counseling profession.. As this year. s PSS shows, we have come far in some areas and not far enough in others.
