2008 Short Course: Taking Heredity to Heart: Cardiovascular Genetics, An Overview

Why You Should Attend the 2008 Short Course

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and is a growing public health concern worldwide. The understanding of genetic causes and risk factors for cardiovascular diseases is increasing rapidly and the demand for genetic counseling for this class of diseases is expanding. The importance of this area of genetics is at an all-time high. The 2008 Short Course, Taking Heredity to Heart: Cardiovascular Genetics, An Overview, will provide an educational and interactive forum for genetic counselors and other healthcare professionals to learn about complex cardiovascular diseases with specific focus on issues most pertinent to the practice of genetic counseling.

After attending this course participants will be able to:

  • Identify symptoms, diagnosis and treatment for hereditary cardiovascular diseases and explain the role of genetics in a variety of conditions including congenital heart defects, cardiomyopathies, cardiac arrhythmias, aortic disease and atherosclerosis
  • Describe general cardiac structure and function, as well as methods of cardiac examination and testing, that constitute a diagnostic evaluation for a variety of cardiovascular conditions
  • Recognize and develop opportunities for collaboration between genetic counselors and healthcare professionals in cardiology
  • Assess the potential growth of cardiac clinical services and cardiac research projects involving genetics and genetic counselors

Continuing Education Units

NSGC anticipates approval of up to 1.15 CEUs or 11.5 contact hours (Category 1) for the Short Course. NSGC has been approved as an Authorized Provider by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET). The American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) will accept CEUs attained at the Short Course for purposes of certification and recertification.
