Kelly Ormond
President 2005

Kelly E. Ormond, Director of the Graduate Program in Genetic Counseling and Assistant Professor for the Department of Medicine and Center for Genetic Medicine at Northwestern University, has been elected as President of the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC). Her term will continue through November 2005.

As NSGC President, Ormond is responsible for leading the association and serving as its chief spokesperson. Her areas of expertise include prenatal genetic counseling, screening for cystic fibrosis and genetic counseling for Huntington disease, Alzheimer disease and other adult-onset disorders. She can also comment on the impact of genetics in perceptions of disabilities, ethical issues in genetics and integrating genetics into internal medical practice.

Ormond has been with Northwestern University since 1997. A graduate of the University with a Master’s of Science in Genetic Counseling, Ormond is certified in genetic counseling by the American Board of Genetic Counseling. She was also a Fellow at the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics at the University of Chicago. Prior to her teaching career, Ormond worked as a genetic counselor of prenatal, pediatric, adult genetics and teratology at the University of Vermont and at Northwestern University.

She has been a member of NSGC since 1992, and has been active in the development of the Society’s educational programs. She co-chaired the Annual Education Conference Planning Committee in 2000, and served as chair of the Education Committee from 2001-2003. Ormond is also active in the March of Dimes, American College of Medical Genetics and the American Society of Human Genetics.

She has spoken extensively on ethical issues and genetics related to the perception of disabilities, and has published articles on her work in carrier screening, prenatal counseling and decision-making by health professionals and patients, including several pieces in the Journal of Genetic Counseling.
