Molecular technologies are advancing at a rapid rate. This course provides training for genetic counselors to understand and critically evaluate the technologies in use today. The course will review NGS basics, describe common terminology and detail the strengths and limitations of NGS clinical applications.

Course Learning Objectives:

After attending this session, participants should be able to:

  1. Recall the basics of NGS including library preparation, clonal amplification, and sequencing.
  2. Describe NGS common terminology including sequence enrichment, read depth, coverage, and alignment.
  3. Detail the strengths and limitations of NGS clinical applications including panel testing and whole exome sequencing.

The National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) has been authorized to offer up to 0.45 CEUs or 4.51 Category 1 Contact Hours for the activity: NextGen Sequencing A to Z online course through 05/12/2019. The American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) will accept CEUs earned at this program for the purposes of genetic counselor certification and recertification. Genetic counselors must be certified at the time of the activity in order for credits to count towards recertification.
