Ethical, Legal and Social Challenges with Genetic Testing

This course aims to share evidence-based guidance regarding current ethical, legal and social issues that genetic counselors and other medical professionals may face when ordering, interpreting, or managing genetic information. Modules will discuss the return of results, duty to re-contact, conflicts of interest, data sharing and privacy as well as genetic discrimination.

Course learning objectives:

  • Generalize the ethical, practical and policy arguments for contacting patients with either research results or updated test results from clinic
  • Identify ways to find potential conflicts of interest and genetic discrimination in practice
  • Examine how sharing genetics data can be helpful
