Genetic counselors are professionals trained to provide information about genetic diseases to individuals who are at risk for those conditions or symptomatic and to counsel them on issues related to family planning, inheritance potential and family dynamics.
This course aims to educate the genetic counselor about the intricacies of Huntington's disease so they are better able to apply their knowledge and skills about hereditary diseases when counseling a person at risk who is seeking predictive testing or a symptomatic individual seeking confirmatory testing thereby increasing access to trained genetic professionals.
Learning Objectives
- Prepare the community-based genetic counselor to address the unique challenges a person at risk for Huntington's disease may present in predictive testing situations.
- Provide tools and expert knowledge about Huntington's disease to facilitate the process of counseling and testing by a non-HD specific genetic counselor.
- Educate the community-based genetic counselor to recognize special issues related to HD genetic testing including testing minors, implications of being first to test in family, testing twins, as well as mental health issues including suicide.
