This course aims to illustrate variant interpretation principles and skills and how they can inform the clinical practice of a genetic counselor. The course will discuss ACMG (American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics) Guidelines in the context of whole genome sequencing/whole exome sequencing, as well as software, tools and databases available to inform variant interpretation.
After completing this 3.60 hour course, learners will be able to:
- Interpret evidence underlying gene-disease associations and variant-disease associations
- Examine the tools and software available for variant interpretation
- Describe the challenges in variant interpretation

The National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) has been authorized to offer up to 0.36 CEUs or 3.60 Category 1 Contact Hours for the activity: Variant Interpretation in the Era of WGS/WES online course through 04/27/2018. The American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) will accept CEUs earned at this program for the purposes of genetic counselor certification and recertification. Genetic counselors must be certified at the time of the activity in order for credits to count towards recertification.
