Focus on Exome Sequencing. Part 1 aims to serve as an introduction with a review of the impact of NGS on the field of genetics/genomics and a basic overview of the technology. Part 2 will delve into NGS in more depth via a review of common NGS terminology and applications introduction including genome, exome, and panel sequencing. Part 3 will discuss the application of NGS to clinical testing including a comparison of panels versus exome sequencing. Exome 101

Genetic medicine is rapidly evolving into genomic medicine. This course will focus on the use of whole genome technologies such as whole exome sequencing. Modules will focus on the technology of genome sequencing as well as the use of these genome technologies in specialties such as pediatrics and oncology. Modules will also explore the impact of applying this technology to population screening, its importance in gene discovery and the unique ethical, legal, and social issues relevant to genetic counseling.

The National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) has been authorized to offer up to 0.38 CEUs or 3.82 Category 1 Contact Hours for the activity: Exome 101 online course through 10/17/2019. The American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) will accept CEUs earned at this program for the purposes of genetic counselor certification and recertification. Genetic counselors must be certified at the time of the activity in order for credits to count towards recertification.

Rare Diseases: Genetic Counselor and Patient Experiences

Each module of this course will include a genetic counselor expert who will present a review of a rare disease, provide insight on current issues surrounding the condition and discuss the testing and counseling process for the rare disease. Genetic counselors will learn how these experts have taken unique situations and expanded their knowledge of specific disease but more importantly how these lessons can be applied across the field of genetic counseling. Additionally, each module includes a patient perspective, in which a patient will speak to his/her experience with the conditions and the counseling process.

The National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) has been authorized to offer up to 0.37 CEUs or 3.76 Category 1 Contact Hours for the activity: Rare Diseases: Genetic Counselor and Patient Experiences online course through 11/16/2019. The American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) will accept CEUs earned through this program for the purposes of genetic counselor certification and recertification.
