Variant Interpretation in the Era of WGS/WES

This course aims to illustrate variant interpretation principles and skills and how they can inform the clinical practice of a genetic counselor. The course will discuss ACMG (American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics) Guidelines in the context of whole genome sequencing/whole exome sequencing, as well as software, tools and databases available to inform variant interpretation.

What the Specialized Genetic Counselor Needs to Know about Other Areas of Genomic Medicine

Genetic counselors practicing in a specific area of medicine often are faced with risk assessment and management issues beyond that specialty. The course will explore four specialty areas of genetic counseling - cardiovascular, metabolic, neurogenetic and psychiatric - highlighting family history red flags, risk assessment for rare and common conditions, current guidelines in screening/testing and technological advances that impact clinical care within those specialties.

Revisiting Research: Improving Your Skills to Integrate Research into Your Role

This course focuses on building and expanding research skills in genetic counselors across roles, settings and specialties to empower the profession to perform thoughtful research related to genetic counseling practice and outcomes. The four modules will discuss how to explore innovative opportunities to become involved in research, identify resources in developing a research program, and provide useful quantitative and qualitative skills to confidently integrate research into your current role.
