DESCRIPTION
Inequity and marginalization exist in our professional, societal, and personal surroundings. In many cases, we are unaware of the ways in which our biases affect our behaviors and actions that can perpetuate these inequities. This course will address the historical, societal, and neurological underpinnings of implicit bias formation. Course participants can expect to better identify the processes of bias formation and strategize methods to cope with, reduce, and transform biases in aid of inclusion for all, including patients and colleagues.
COURSE OBJECTIVES
- Determine the ways implicit bias may affect you in your workplace, professional life, and everyday life.
- Illustrate how implicit bias works in conjunction with structural and societal power imbalances that have real impacts on the healthcare field.
- Identify tactics to use when identifying an implicit bias in yourself and/or in someone else such as self-reflection and self-centering.
