Advocating for Cancer Genetic Counselors: A Business Case Toolkit

Genetic counselors play an important role in the prevention, treatment and care of people with cancer. As new testing options and treatments become available across the cancer care continuum, it is important for cancer programs to use genetic counselors as part of evidence-based care.

Business Case Toolkit

The National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) collaborated with advocacy partners and genetic counseling experts to develop this cancer genetic counseling business case toolkit for organizations that want to hire a genetic counselor and establish a cancer genetic counseling program or expand the current genetic counselor role and grow the cancer genetic counseling program.

The toolkit is organized in three parts:

  • Section 1: Lay the Foundation: This section provides practical advice for preparing a foundation for your business case, including identifying champions and supporting team members, building organizational buy-in, and gathering internal and external information to support the case.
  • Section 2: Develop the Case: This section provides a guide for pulling the information you have gathered into a written business case.
  • Section 3: Refine the Pitch: The final section provides tips and resources to translate your business case into a concise and effective pitch for your stakeholders, including tailoring talking points, developing materials, and sharing testimonials.
