Continuing Education Credits

This page is intended for individual genetic counselors seeking Continuing Education credit. All applications and certificates from NSGC are stored within the NSGC CEU Portal.

Access CEU Portal

*Please note that NSGC membership is not required to access the CEU Portal, but you must have an NSGC Guest account to login and access any certificates.*

Earning Category 1 CEUs

Category 1 CEUs

Category 1 CEUs can be granted for educational programs with content targeted to genetic counselors and pre-approved by an ABGC approved genetic counseling CEU provider.

All activities certified by NSGC for Continuing Education are Category 1 CEUs. This includes all educational offerings provided by NSGC directly, in addition to those submitted to and approved by NSGC for Continuing Education.

Activities approved for Category 1 CEUs are required to advertise both their approval and the number of approved contact hours the activity will provide.

Process & Requirements

  • The Activity Organizer may require additional details to report your attendance to NSGC
  • Completion of these materials is required for certificate award
  • Organizers have up to 60 days after the activity to submit post-activity materials to NSGC
  • NSGC will upload certificates for all individuals listed in attendance materials
Attendance Fee

Completion of an activity and issuance of a certificate is associated with a $35 attendance fee per person. The activity organizer may incorporate this fee into the cost of your attendance, pay this fee on your behalf, or choose not to pay this fee. If the organizer does not pay this fee on your behalf, you will be required to pay it to obtain your certificate. Payment must be made to NSGC before CEU certificates will be released to attendees.

If 90 days have passed since the activity and you have not been awarded a CEU certificate, please contact ceu@nsgc.org

Requesting Category 2 CEUs

Category 2 CEUs

Category 2 CEUs can be granted for educational programs with content that is relevant to a genetic counselor's Continuing Education despite not being primarily designed with the Continuing Education of a genetic counselor in mind.

Category 2 CEUs are only available for educational programs that have been approved to offer Continuing Education credits or units by a reputable non-genetic counseling CEU provider.

Tracking Certificates for Recertification

All CEUs should be entered into the ABGC CEU tracker, which can be found by logging into ABGC's website and selecting "Recertify" in the upper right-hand corner of the screen, then selecting "My CEUs/PACs Summary" page.

When Should I Expect a Certificate?

Category 1 CEUs

If you've attended a Category 1 approved CEU activity, you can expect to receive a certificate within 90 days following the conclusion of the activity.

Category 2 CEUs

If you've submitted a Category 2 application, you can expect review and approval within 8-10 weeks from your submission date.

Missing Certificates

It is the responsibility of each genetic counselor to track their own CEUs at all times.

If you are missing any anticipated certificates after the period above, confirm that you submitted the correct NSGC User ID to the activity organizer.

Please reach out to ceu@nsgc.org if you are unable to reach the organizer, or if they have indicated that attendance has been submitted.

Professional Activity Credits (PACs)

A PAC, or Professional Activity Credit, is a type of Continuing Education which is awarded for participation in a variety of professional activities determined by ABGC to promote educational development and the genetic counseling profession.

NSGC does not manage the processing or awarding of PACs. For all PAC related inquiries, please view the ABGC guidelines on PACs.
