(Adopted 2026)
The National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) believes it is essential that genetic counselors guide the responsible integration of artificial intelligence (AI) tools into genomic medicine while maintaining the person-centered approach at the core of genetic counseling practice.
Ethical, regulatory, and societal considerations related to AI operate across multiple interconnected levels—affecting individuals, communities, broader society, and global systems. Genetic counselors are uniquely positioned to navigate these complexities given their expertise in translating complex information, advocating for underserved populations, and centering patient autonomy in clinical decision-making. Development and implementation of AI applications into genomic medicine requires collaboration with genetic counselors and impacted communities, rigorous validation in diverse populations, and transparent reporting of limitations and biases. This process must consider potential harms and prioritize patient safety, data privacy, and equitable access to care.
NSGC recognizes that AI technologies have the potential to positively impact all genetic counseling practice domains, including clinical care, research, education, laboratory, and healthcare service delivery. Genetic counselors retain responsibility when using AI tools, including disclosing use of AI, verifying the accuracy of information, validating clinical interpretations, and ensuring appropriate patient care decisions. The use of AI should help genetic counselors practice at the top of their scope and complement, not replace, the essential human elements of genetic counseling.
