CPT® code 96041 represents an important milestone for the genetic counseling profession and the ongoing recognition of the services genetic counselors provide. Replacing CPT® code 96040 in January 2025, this code more accurately reflects the way genetic counseling is delivered by allowing reporting based on the total time a genetic counselor spends providing services on the date of the encounter rather than limiting reporting to face-to-face time.

As with any coding change, adoption and implementation have varied across organizations and payers. Continued education and advocacy remain important to support consistent understanding and utilization of the code. NSGC continues to engage with payers, healthcare organizations, and other stakeholders to advance recognition of genetic counseling services and promote appropriate use of CPT® code 96041. Members also play an important role in educating their organizations and payer partners about the code and its role in supporting patient access to genetic counseling services.
