DESCRIPTION
Today there are numerous pathways to parenthood that are not well understood by most health professionals. And, with new technologies being developed rapidly, health professionals will undoubtedly encounter patients and families who have opted to explore pathways such as adoption, surrogacy and assisted reproductive technologies. In particular, as genetics professionals such as genetic counselors, aim to collect a comprehensive family history and counsel patients through health care decisions, it is important that they have a working knowledge of the technologies, legal considerations, social and emotional considerations and pedigree tools that they may need to utilize or reference in conversations with patients and other health professionals. In this spirit, this course aims to identify patient motivations for creating a family via adoption, surrogacy, and assisted reproductive technologies. This course will review the technologies/paths available as well as legal and psychosocial considerations.
