Become a Member of NSGC

NSGC is a community of more than 5,000 genetic counselors and genetic counseling professionals that focuses on the professional interests of genetic counselors and provides a network for professional communications. NSGC membership provides access to continuing education opportunities, professional resources, advocacy and the discussion issues relevant to human genetics and the genetic counseling profession. Membership Lengths 

  • One-year memberships purchased from Oct. 1, 2025 onwards will be active once paid through Dec. 31, 2026.
  • Two-year memberships purchased from Oct. 1, 2025 onwards will be active once paid through Dec. 31, 2027.

Membership Types

NSGC memberships are based on the calendar year/NSGC’s fiscal year, January 1 – December 31. All new memberships (except students and international students) will incur a one-time only, non-refundable application fee of US $15.

NSGC now offers two-year membership purchase options for Full, Associate, International Genetic Counselor and Emeritus memberships.

Please note that membership dues payments are non-refundable. 

Full Member – One-Year - $315, Two-Year - $630 

Full membership shall be extended to any person who: (i) holds a graduate degree from an accredited genetic counseling training program, or (ii) prior to May 1, 2014 had a Master’s or Ph.D. degree in a related field such as nursing, social work or public health and has had a broad range of clinical genetics training and whose primary responsibility for at least three years prior to the date of such person’s application was genetic counseling, or (iii) is certified in genetic counseling by the American Board of Medical Genetics and/or the American Board of Genetic Counseling. Full Members receive all member benefits, have voting rights, can hold office and serve on committees.

Associate Member – One-Year - $272, Two-Year - $544

Healthcare professionals with an interest or focus in genetics and genomics. Please note that the NSGC Executive office will need to approve your membership prior to collecting your first dues. If you have questions on becoming an Associate Member, please contact the NSGC Executive office at nsgc@nsgc.orgAssociate Members have all privileges of full members except they may not vote, or serve on the Board of Directors, or as Chair of a committee.

New Genetic Counselor Member – One-Year - $220

Discounted membership for genetic counselors who graduated from an ACGC-accredited genetic counseling program within the last two years. New Genetic Counselor Members receive all the same member benefits as Full Members, but are eligible for a discounted membership fee for up to two years as a newly graduated genetic counselor.

Student Member – One-Year - $50

Special membership for students currently enrolled in an ACGC-accredited genetic counseling training program. Student Members receive all the same privileges as Associate Members, with the exception that Students may not vote or access the Journal of Genetic Counseling.

International Genetic Counselor Members

Membership for individuals who hold an MD degree, or a master’s or Ph.D. degree in genetics, genetic counseling, nursing, social work or public health from a non-ACGC accredited training program and currently reside outside of the United States and Canada. Please note that the NSGC Executive Office will need to approve your membership prior to collecting your first dues. International Genetic Counselor members receive all member benefits and can serve on committees, but do not have voting rights, cannot hold office and may not apply for NSGC awards, scholarships or grant opportunities.

 

International Genetic Counselor Student Member

Membership for individuals who are currently enrolled in a graduate-level genetic counseling training program not accredited by ACGC and reside outside of the United States and Canada. Please note that the NSGC Executive Office will need to approve your membership prior to collecting your first dues. If you have questions about becoming an International Genetic Counselor Student member, please contact the NSGC Executive Office at nsgc@nsgc.org. International Genetic Counselor Student members receive all member benefits and can serve on committees, but do not have voting rights, cannot hold office and may not apply for NSGC awards, scholarships, or grant opportunities.
 

Emeritus Member – One-Year - $140, Two-Year - $280

Membership for retired genetic counselors who have been Full members in good standing with NSGC for a minimum of 15 years. Emeritus membership must be requested in writing by emailing nsgc@nsgc.org. After your membership request has been approved and dues have been received, you will be awarded all the benefits of the Emeritus membership category.

*Dues payments to NSGC, classified by the IRS as a 501(c)(6) not-for-profit organization, are not deductible as charitable contributions for federal income tax purposes. However, they may be deductible under other provisions of the Internal Revenue Code subject to restrictions imposed as a result of lobbying activities. NSGC estimates that the nondeductible portion of your 2026 dues is 42%. The nondeductible amount (42%) is calculated by dividing total NSGC lobbying expenditures by total dues income (excluding all other income).
